About us

Our mission is to give every not-for-profit board access to the latest governance best practices

About Us

Like you, we believe in the impact that great not-for-profit and community organisations can make in the world.

For that to happen, you need the right leadership – a board that confidently steers the organisation in the right direction.

However, many boards aren’t guided by a shared understanding of governance practices, but by the loudest person in the room.

We provide governance resources to all your board members and the CEO or manager. So everyone can work together to deliver on your organisation’s purpose.

The story behind Overview Effect

Hi, I’m Carol Scholes, founder of Overview Effect.

For more than 20 years, I’ve led hundreds of training sessions on governance in not-for-profit organisations.

Often, I’ve visited the same organisation more than once to redo the training as board members kept changing.

Knowing how tight the budget of a not-for-profit organisation can be, I was saddened to see that they had to constantly reinvest in governance training.

And some couldn’t afford it at all.

To solve this dilemma, I created Overview Effect – an online learning platform for flexible, always on hand board governance training. We offer subscriptions that are accessible for every not-for-profit.

“If someone were to say to me, (which they often do) “I think I need help with my board what should I do?”  Or they say “I am not sure of how to get this strategic plan off the ground” I say call Carol! Without her coaching, consulting, training, her deep understanding of the sector and governance, I would not be where I am today or achieved as much in my work and board work as I have today.”

Rochana Sheward
CEO Belong Aotearoa

"As a registered charity run by volunteers, we found it difficult to work out best practices for governance. Carol explained key concepts and best practices to us and gave us great value advice as we navigated our way through board recruitment, employment and trust deed changes. Thanks Carol."

Chair Gribblehirst Community Hub
